Existence of institutions is one clear difference, which Durkheim names between humans and other animals. But it is still difficult to place the origins of the qualitative difference between human and animal life: where human, real social life and society started and where the difference in degree changed into a qualitative difference. The Durkheimian boundary between men and other animals—real social life and animal life—is thus both strict and blurred. Human society and social life are definitely separate realms from all the others, but it remains unclear how we should understand the starting point of humanity and the end of animality. Still, the domain of study of human social life and society must be strictly independent from the disciplines that aim to explain other areas of human life, let alone animal life.
